Reading
Reading books: Your child will bring one decodable book home every Thursday. This will be the book they have worked on in their Reading Practice Sessions at school that week. It is an expectation that your child reads to you once before returning the books for changing on Monday. Please can you sign their reading diary to confirm this.
Books We Know: Your child will bring home a book they know each week. They will have read these books at school so sit back and enjoy them telling you a story. It will be their responsibility to look after it and they must remember to bring it to school each Friday in order to exchange it for a new book.
PE
From September 2023, we will have PE every Thursday. Please ensure children have PE kits in school and any earrings are removed or plasters need to be provided for the children to cover them with.

All children should wear full uniform including their ALWAYS badges.
We do allow pupils to wear all black trainers - no coloured swooshes/stripes etc. with all black soles.
Black shoes are also still acceptable and preferred for school.

In English, our new book we are looking at is called ‘Bee and Me’. We have been learning all about bees and even tasted some delicious honey. We have already produced a fantastic fact sheet. Ask your child to tell you some facts.

In English, the children are using role play to make up their own middle of the story for ‘Bee and Me’. They have some fantastic ideas so we are looking forward to seeing it in their writing tomorrow.

Today we had a lovely Autumn walk to Griffin Park. We observed how nature changes the environment through the seasons. The children made bark rubbings and collected natural materials to be used in art next week. The weather was lovely and all the children behaved exceptionally.

Today in History, we started our new topic 'Florence Nightingale'. First we watched 'Magic Grandad' and dressed up as doctors, nurses and patients. We talked about the differences between the hospitals in the past and present. The children really enjoyed it and can't wait to learn more about Florence next week!

In English, we are reading 'The Woolly Mammoth' and learning about instructions. The children had to get to the tyres in the playground by carefully following instructions from their partner or Miss Rigby. The children had fun and now know what makes a good instruction.

Yesterday morning, we started our DT week by looking at the features of different playgrounds.
In the afternoon, we looked at the features of Mill Hill park and what materials are used.
This morning, we created a moving swing using LEGO.
We then had a practice run using crafting straws and masking tape to make a climbing frame. It was really tricky!
Next, we had a go at making ladders.
We then attached an additional part which made it into a slide. How fab do they look!?

If there is a need to switch back to remote learning in the future, we will adhere to our Remote Learning policy. This morning in Maths, the children have been sorting objects.
This afternoon we are doing yoga in PE.
In RE, we are learning all about where our food comes from before it reaches the shops. Is it grown or does it come from an animal? Ask your child what they have learnt.
In Science, our topic is 'Animals including humans'. For our first lesson we learnt about the different parts of the body. We started the lesson by playing ‘head, shoulders, knees and toes’.
We then drew around two of the boys and the children helped label their body parts.
We have been working super hard so deserved an extra play this afternoon in the beautiful sunshine.
On Fridays, we are very fortunate to have lessons with our specialists teachers from Junior Jam. We are starting our morning with computing. We are learning to use 'live loops' on Garage Band.

Yesterday in Maths, we were learning to write our numbers in words.
In RE, we are continuing our work about harvest. We are learning about the processes food goes through from farm to fork to ensure it is safe for us to eat.

Yesterday we had a visit from Blackburn Museum to show us a range of Victorian toys. We all had a go at playing with them and discussed how they are different to the toys we have today. We then made our own cup and balls.
In Science, we have been learning about senses. The children have had lots of fun this afternoon! They have been trying foods, smelling various flavours of crisps, touching items in a bag, hearing different sounds and using a magnifying glass to look at a sponge. In Year 1 we have been doing gymnastics with Georgina from Blackburn Rovers on a Thursday! We have really enjoyed it and we have made a lot of progress over this half term.
Today the children made their final product for DT week. We are ever so proud of them as they have worked so hard improving their skills throughout the week. As you can see, all the hard work definitely paid off!

Charlotte from Greenarc visited Year 1 this morning. She told us all about her company, construction and electrical careers. Charlotte certainly inspired our children. We are already looking forward to your next visit Charlotte!
This morning in Maths, we have been sorting 2D shapes into groups. We discussed why we had grouped them in that way and what made the shapes different. We then had a go at putting shapes back together that had been cut up into smaller pieces. This helped us to identify the different properties of the shapes.
In English, the children retold ‘Bee and Me’ using role-play. They were all incredible and we definitely have some stars in the making!
Yesterday we had No Pensday across the school! We completed a range of activities that supported our learning without using pens or pencils. Instead we used our oracy and fine motor skills.
In Maths, we are now subtracting using a part part whole model. Look how clever we are!
What an amazing morning Year 1 have had! We were extremely lucky to have two beautiful reindeers visit us at school.
We have had a busy few weeks in Year 1! Our Wriggly Nativity is done and the children performed amazingly. Due to this, we all got star of the week this week. Thank you to all the parents that attended.

This afternoon we have been doing Art with Mrs Harrison. We have been creating robots by printing with faces of 3D shapes.

We are making numbers to 20 using Base 10 in Maths. Today we are focusing on 11, 12 and 13.
In English, the children have been finishing their predictions about our new book ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’. Miss Kay then read the story to them.
Yesterday in PE, we were working on our running, hopping and throwing skills.
In Art, we were printing with different objects and mixing primary colours.
Yesterday in Maths, we were making numbers up to 20 using a rekenrek. It is important that we use a range of equipment as it helps to secure the knowledge of number.
In Science, we are continuing to look at materials so we turned into scientists and went on a material hunt. We had to fill in a table stating which object we were looking at, what material it was made of and how it felt. The children did a marvellous job
In Science this week, we have looked at grouping materials. We used our knowledge around properties from last week to help us.
In English we have been looking at instructions! The children had a go at instructing Miss Kay on how to draw a flower. This was tricky, as we realised how precise we have to be to make sure we get the correct result.
Today the children gave Miss Kay instructions on how to make a jam sandwich! They loved it and we even got to eat one at the end.
In the past few days, we've been exploring time adverbials and incorporating them into our instructions by using imperative verbs.
We have been using clay in Art to create stamps. First, we flattened the clay and then used various tools to make imprints on it. We then painted the stamps and used them to print on our card. We are really impressed with how they turned out!
Yesterday marked the beginning of our DT. week dedicated to creating delicious smoothies. To kick things off, we engaged in a lively discussion about various fruits and vegetables and then sorted them. This is the start of our investigating
After that, we had a discussion about the origin of various fruits and vegetables and the fascinating process of their growth.
In the afternoon, we had the opportunity to try various smoothies and complete a chart indicating if they tasted sweet or sour, as well as whether we enjoyed them.
The children have just tasted lots of different fruit and vegetables so they can choose their favourite ones to put in their smoothie.
We are now focusing on the skills part of our DT week. This afternoon, we have been learning the skill of cutting and how to do it safely. This will make sure that when we cut our fruit for our smoothies, we are super safe and our fruit is cut perfectly.
Our next skill was juicing, this was really fun! We even got to taste the juice, it was very sour!
What an amazing day we have had in Year 1
Today has been our design and make day! We had three stations: juicing, cutting, and blending. The children were fabulous and used the skills we have previously practiced to make their smoothie.
We had so much fun and the smoothies tasted great.

We are grateful to Lisa from Place2Be for taking the time to speak to our Year 1 class yesterday about Children's Mental Health Week.
She shared with us a wonderful story titled 'Marvin Gets Mad!' In this story, Marvin, the main character, encourages children to consider the consequences and challenges of having a tantrum. It serves as a reminder for children to reflect on their behaviour and find ways to manage their anger.
Afterwards, we all enjoyed singing and dancing to 'Try Everything' from Zootopia, which teaches us about resilience, perseverance, and the importance of never giving up, even in the face of setbacks and failures.

Today in Maths, we have been looking at length and height. We have been finding objects around the classroom and comparing them, using the words taller, shorter, longer, and smaller. We even stood next to our friends to compare heights!
In Maths we have been measuring using objects. We talked about using a suitable measuring tool based on the item being measured. This was fun and we gained lots of new skills around measuring accurately.
Our new topic in Geography is the United Kingdom. We have been exploring different resources, such as Google Earth, maps, globes, and images, to help us gain knowledge about our country and where it is located in the world.
Today in Music with Junior Jam, the children are being taught how to play the ukulele. We've been focusing on the correct way to hold it and practising strumming the strings to create a melody.
We’re still exploring mark-making in Art using a variety of tools. Our focus has been on creating various shapes and playing with light and dark. The results are truly stunning!
What an amazing day we have had✨ We have done lots of fun activities around words to help widen our vocabulary.
In Year 1 our new topic in RE is EasterIn Year 1 our new topic in RE is Easter. We have been looking at new life and the relation this has to Spring and Easter. Therefore, we had a go at creating our own new life by growing cress. Over the last we have been watching the cress grow and watching it change over time. We are so impressed! The children will be bringing their cress home tonight.
What an amazing day we have had! We have learnt a funny poem and performed it to the rest of KS1. Thank you to all parents and carers who have donated £1 for comic relief, we really appreciate your continued support.

In Maths, we have been counting by grouping in tens. This is an easier way for us to count numbers up to 50.
Today, we started our afternoon by practicing our handwriting and listening to relaxing music! We did a fabulous job.
In Science this week, we have planted our own seeds and we are going to observe them grow over time.
Prior to this, we looked at a variety of seeds and how they look so different. We discussed what they will grow into and what happens to the seeds.
In English, we have been focusing on the book Mole’s Star. Today we made a wish whilst looking at the stars just like Mole did in the story. We are now writing our wishes in a star outline and hoping that they come true.
This week in Science, we have been learning about the roots of a plant. We have had a close look at the roots and discussed what they do and why they are important.
In English, we have been acting out the story of Mole’s Star. This is to help us remember the story ready for writing our narrative.
In Maths this week, we have been counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have been using various equipment, songs and activities to help us with this.

Reading books: Your child will bring one decodable book home every Thursday. This will be the book they have worked on in their Reading Practice Sessions at school that week. It is an expectation that your child reads to you once before returning the books for changing on Monday. Please can you sign their reading diary to confirm this.
All children should wear full uniform including their ALWAYS badges.
